Understanding Spiritual Warfare and Standing Firm in Christ.
Main Text:
Ephesians 6:10–18
Supporting Texts:
1 Peter 5:8–9; James 4:7; Luke 4:1–13; 2 Corinthians 10:3–5
The Christian life is not a playground; it is a battlefield.
The moment a person genuinely gives his or her life to Christ, that person enters a spiritual conflict. We have an enemy who does not want us to grow, pray, obey God, discover our purpose, or become effective witnesses for Christ.
The Bible says:
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” — 1 Peter 5:8
Notice that Scripture does not say the devil might seek to attack. It says he walks about seeking whom he may devour.
But here is the good news: the believer is not powerless.
Jesus Christ has already defeated Satan through His death and resurrection. Therefore, we do not fight for victory; we stand in the victory Christ has already won.
Spiritual lesson:
Do not wait until temptation becomes overwhelming before you start resisting it.
Jesus answered Satan with the Word of God.
Matthew 4:4:
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
Know the Word before the battle comes.
2. DEMONS ATTACK THROUGH DECEPTION AND LIES.
Satan is called “the father of lies” in John 8:44.
One of his greatest weapons is deception.
He whispers thoughts such as:
“God doesn’t really love you.”
“You have sinned too much for God to forgive you.”
“You will never become anything.”
“Everybody is against you.”
“There is no hope.”
“You don’t need God anymore.”
“Just compromise a little.”
Not every negative thought is necessarily a demonic attack. Human emotions, circumstances, stress, and our own sinful nature can also influence our thoughts.
That is why Christians must test what they hear and think against God’s Word.
2 Corinthians 10:5 says:
“Bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”
Don’t believe every thought simply because it entered your mind.
A thought must be tested by truth.
If a thought contradicts God’s Word, do not build your life around it.
3. DEMONS ATTACK THROUGH DISCOURAGEMENT AND FEAR.
Fear can paralyze a believer.
The enemy wants you to become so afraid that you stop praying, stop serving, stop witnessing, and stop pursuing God’s purpose.
Consider Elijah.
After experiencing a great victory on Mount Carmel, Elijah became afraid when Jezebel threatened him.
1 Kings 19:3–4 tells us that he fled and eventually became deeply discouraged.
This teaches us something important:
A spiritual victory does not mean you will never experience emotional or spiritual exhaustion.
Sometimes after a major victory, a believer may become vulnerable through exhaustion, isolation, disappointment, or fear.
But notice what God did for Elijah.
God did not abandon him.
God strengthened him, spoke to him, and redirected him.
Isaiah 41:10:
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God.”
When fear comes, don’t run away from God.
Run toward God.
4. DEMONS ATTACK THROUGH DIVISION, OFFENSE AND UNFORGIVENESS.
The enemy understands the destructive power of broken relationships.
When believers become consumed with:
bitterness,
hatred,
jealousy,
unforgiveness,
suspicion,
unnecessary quarrels,
their spiritual effectiveness can be weakened.
Paul warned believers in Ephesians 4:26–27:
“Let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil.”
Notice those words:
“Give place to the devil.”
Unresolved anger and bitterness can create opportunities for destructive behavior and spiritual vulnerability.
This does not mean every argument is caused by a demon.
But Satan can exploit division.
That is why believers must learn to forgive, communicate, reconcile, and walk in love.
Don’t allow the devil to use your offense against your destiny.
5. DEMONS ATTACK THROUGH DISTRACTION AND SPIRITUAL NEGLECT.
Sometimes the enemy does not need to make a Christian commit a dramatic sin.
He simply keeps the believer too distracted to seek God.
Prayer becomes irregular.
Bible study becomes occasional.
Church fellowship becomes unnecessary.
Worship becomes entertainment.
The believer becomes consumed with:
money,
social media,
relationships,
entertainment,
ambition,
worldly distractions.
Slowly, spiritual sensitivity declines.
Jesus warned His disciples in Matthew 26:41:
“Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation.”
A neglected spiritual life can leave a believer less prepared to recognize and resist temptation.
Remember:
You cannot remain spiritually strong while deliberately starving your spirit.
Luke 4:1–13
Jesus entered the wilderness and was tempted by Satan.
What did Jesus do?
He did not panic.
He did not negotiate.
He did not surrender.
He responded with Scripture:
“It is written.”
Three times, Jesus confronted the enemy’s temptation with God’s Word.
This gives us a powerful pattern:
Know the Word.
Believe the Word.
Speak the Word.
Live the Word.
Spiritual warfare is not about shouting the loudest.
It is about standing firmly in Christ and submitting to God’s truth.
🛡️ HOW SHOULD BELIEVERS RESPOND?
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
Notice the order:
Submit → Resist → Victory
Don’t try to resist Satan while refusing to submit to God.
2. PUT ON THE ARMOUR OF GOD
Read Ephesians 6:10–18.
God provides:
The belt of truth
The breastplate of righteousness
The shoes of the Gospel of peace
The shield of faith
The helmet of salvation
The sword of the Spirit
Prayer
The Christian does not enter spiritual warfare naked.
God has equipped you.
3. GUARD YOUR MIND.
Romans 12:2 teaches believers to be transformed through the renewing of their minds.
Be careful about what you repeatedly watch, listen to, read, and meditate upon.
What you continually feed your mind can influence your thoughts, attitudes, and behavior.
4. STAY CONNECTED TO CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP.
Don’t fight every battle alone.
Hebrews 10:25 encourages believers not to abandon fellowship.
There are moments when you need mature Christians to pray with you, encourage you, correct you, and help you remain accountable.
5. PRAY WITHOUT CEASING.
Prayer is not merely an emergency button.
Prayer is a lifestyle.
When you pray consistently, you develop spiritual alertness and dependence upon God.
Child of God, do not live in fear of demons.
Live in the knowledge of Christ.
The devil wants you distracted.
Christ wants you focused.
The devil wants you discouraged.
Christ wants you strengthened.
The devil wants you deceived.
Christ gives you truth.
The devil wants you defeated.
Christ calls you to stand.
1 John 4:4 declares:
“Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”
Therefore, stand firm.
Put on the armour of God.
Study the Word.
Pray consistently.
Walk in holiness.
Forgive quickly.
Guard your mind.
Stay connected to Christ.
And never forget:
THE BATTLE MAY BE REAL, BUT CHRIST HAS ALREADY WON THE VICTORY.
Stand in Christ.
Walk in truth.
Resist the enemy.
And keep your eyes on Jesus.
Amen.
